The successful bidder of the open architectural contest for the development of architectural and town-planning concept of the two sites on Komsomolskaya Street: in the area of intersection with Bolnichnaya Street and at the intersection with Gornaya Street (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) became UNK project design bureau.

The contest was announced by the administration of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on November 2, 2018,  and the jury summed up the results on December 12. Six architectural workshops participated in the contest.

It is planned to place a secondary educational school for 1260 seats, a kindergarten for 300 kids and a school of arts on the site located to the south-east of the intersection of Bolnichnaya and Komsomolskaya streets with an area of 4.3 hectares.  In addition to traditional playgrounds for preschool children, sports complexes and the stadium, it was required to foresee a scientific-experimental zone with geographical and meteorological sites, a summer theater with an open stage and a ground for studying road traffic rules.

“The educational cluster in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is a kindergarten, primary and secondary school, a school of arts and a large sports unit at the same time. The main task was to design a completely new type of school, where it would be given an opportunity to enjoy being a child and learn the required lessons, open the abilities of every person. Therefore, we called our project “Funny school”. Every child here can fulfill his potential. the School of arts was designed for artistic types,  and a transformed sports hall and an Eco-park was designed for sport enthusiasts.

In planning, the school is conceived as a city with a central atrium square with a large staircase, which is not just a transit zone, but also a favorite meeting place. Such space encourages communication, effective interaction between children and teachers, and also allows to get rid of unnecessary corridors, and therefore rigid rules of imposed discipline,"  Yuliy Borisov Managing Partner of UNK project noted.
